Basia Cummings is the digital editor of The Observer. Before her recent appointment, she was an editor and partner at Tortoise. Since 2019, she was the host of Tortoise’s weekly investigative show, the Slow Newscast, and editor of numerous investigative series including Sweet Bobby, Hoaxed, Into the Dirt, and Hidden Homicides, which was shortlisted for the 2022 Orwell Prize. Her reporting at Tortoise has won numerous awards: in 2023, she investigated the death of a freelance war reporter, in Pig Iron, which won Best Documentary at the British Podcast Awards. In 2021, she made Left to Die, which won the Foreign Press Award for best podcast. Before Tortoise, Basia worked at the Guardian, the UN, and HuffPost UK.
